Garry was a much loved husband, father and brother who will be sadly missed by all his friends and family. He fought a long battle against prostate cancer with the same strength, bravery and determination that he demonstrated throughout his life, but more importantly with his keen sense of humour even in the final stages of his illness. Although Garry left school with few qualifications, he successfully worked his way up to a high level within the steel industry, gaining a university degree on the way. However, he was even more proud of his family, his beloved wife Sally and his children Richard and Sara. Even after retirement, he continued to remain closely engaged with the local community as a magistrate, and a committed member of Rotary raising funds for charity. He also developed a renewed passion for golf, walking and especially foreign travel. His final months were particularly challenging, but he faced this with the support of family and friends. Garry's family are all particularly grateful for the additional support offered by St Luke's hospice, who allowed him to die with dignity and peace. The staff here are remarkable, and any support for the hospice would be a truly fitting legacy.

So pleased to have got to know Garry over the last few years. We've missed him during his long illness at the bird club walks and meetings.

I only knew Garry when he was already seriously ill earlier this year. He was warm, relaxed and friendly. He made a lasting, positive impression.

Garry was always a bright light. I knew him through Rotary and golf. It was a bonus to be in his company. Greatly missed by all who had the privelige of knowing him.

    Thoughts

Garry was my father-in-law. From the day we met he welcomed me into his family. We had some good times together. I have particularly good memories of the dents we put in each other's scotch inventories, the lively conversations we had around all kinds of topics, the meals we shared both in and out, and most of all the enjoyment that Garry got out of the boat trips we were able to take when he and Sally visited us in the States. He had a positive impact on me. He was a great father and father-in-law. He was a gentleman. He was my friend. I miss him.
