I worked in Earnshaw as a tutor during 'Prof's last year there. It was clear how much he'd made the place a community, not just a place to stay.

Tony was a wonderfully engaging lecturer and gave me great support and encouragement throughout my BA and PhD studies (1982-89). I often think fondly of him when I study the Spanish Golden Age with my own students at Bristol University.

Today we are remembering the second year since Tony passed, thinking of him fondly, raising a glass. So often we will think how much Tony might have enjoyed an exceptional, unique charming restaurant or bar, beautiful scenic drive or view, an adventurous trip. And then we are grateful for the times we had together and for our happy memories of such a distinguished and inspiring person.

Two years ago today, you passed. Still miss you and remember our special times together in Spain, Italy, France, US, and home (Sheffield).

I was a Spanish teacher in the Sheffield area in the 60s. Tony had such a care for what was happening in the schools, and became a very dear friend. No matter that he was (then) senior lecturer and I a mere mortal, he and his lovely wife June took me to their hearts. A great academic and a lovely man, not to mention a fine bon vivant! The years passed and we lost touch, but I remember him with joy and affection. The world is poorer for his and June's passing.

A great teacher, role model hispanist, enthusiastic and committed to his subject and students. I studies Spanish at Sheffield in the mid 80s and was a lucky enough to benefit from his teaching - can never forget his northern pronunciation of Lazarillo de Tormes!

My wife & I fondly remember Tony in that he generously provided our daughter,Ingrid, a tutors position at Earnshaw inthe 1980's whilst she undertook a PhD at Sheffield. Tony and his wife were vary caring to Ingrid during her time at Earnshaw. Vale Tony Heathcote.

Just read about Tony's death in the University of Sheffield magazine (my wife and son's university). I got to know Tony when he chaired the JMB A Level Spanish literature paper meetings in Manchester and I was one of his team which met a couple of times a year in Manchester. Tony was a superb, highly competent chairman with a great sense of humour, who showed a great respect for the views of team members. One of the things that I most remember is that , when it came to remarks, he was always generously inclined to give students the benefit of the doubt, while never lowering his very high standards. It was a privilege and a great joy to work under him and I have the fondest memories of someone who was not only a great academic and teacher but a terrific human being

What a fantastic man -Tony was so kind and generous in all that he did for so many students who had the privilige of being residents in his beloved Earnshaw.Barry. Jim and Tony what a team! So many including myself owe him a great deal -Thank you - you will be remembered with immense fondness

I have only just read of Professor Heathcote's death in the latest University of Sheffield alumni magazine. Tony introduced me to the wonders of Cervantes at the University's Institute for Lifelong Learning in the late 1990's. A great teacher and obviously multi-talented - as illustrated by his stint as an extra in the Rover's Return on Coronation Street while studying in Manchester! I am very sorry to hear he is no longer with us.

All of us Earnshavians owe a great deal to Tony. His pastoral care, either in the bar or in his office the following morning administering a 'telling off' to students for 'borrowing' some item of ephemera from a nearby Hall, will be remembered by us all. Personally I am extremely grateful for the support and advice that Tony willingly gave me at Sheffield both as a student and also a Tutor in Earnshaw. His affection for the Old Earnshavians Association was tremendous and we all will cherish memories of Dinners and cricket matches in days past. May he rest in peace.

I was a student of Tony's at Sheffield University from 1969 to 1972. While I have not seen him in 40 years, I remember well his enthusiasm for the Golden Age theatre of Spain, his ability to make the texts come alive, and his joy for teaching. A real scholar and gentleman who will be sorely missed...

It was back in 1974, when I arrived at the Earnshaw Hall and met with Tony. Although, I graduated in 1975, our friendship continued for further 38 years. Meeting with Tony (and June) was always a highlight of my visit to Sheffield and our last meeting was in July 2012. Tony will always be remembered as a great mentor and a close friend. Shashi Mawkin

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make my Dad's funeral an occasion of which he would have been proud. Trevor Page and John England, your addresses where a great comfort to a proud son and all Tony's friends, colleagues, relatives, neighbours, fellow congregants and students present. Age shall not weary the memories you stirred and the recollections we shared, December 6th, 2012.

A larger than life character in more ways than one! Thanks to Tony my time at Sheffield was socially rewarding as well as academically stimulating. The lessons in life I learned at Earnshaw have stood me in excellent stead over the years. Gracias amigo!

I met Tony in Spain through our mutual friend, María-Elena Ouimette. On several occasions the three of us met in Salamanca taking in the sights and then going for delightful meals Chez Victor. Tony was always very friendly, gracious and entertaining. I will always cherish those happy moments spent in his company.

Tony was a great support to us students in Earnshaw - my own time there was 1975-77. His great sense of humour and kindness remain a happy memory of Sheffield days.

As president of the JCR when Tony first became Warden of Earnshaw Hall, I was always impressed by his encouragement for students to contribute ideas and suggestions on how it could move forward. His positive influence, example and encouragement extended far beyond the students in the Hispanic Studies Department to the great benefit of those lucky enough to know him. His humour, hospitality and friendship will be missed by us all
