Brett was born in Balham, London in 1952. He was an apprentice joiner and carpenter at Wandsworth Council in the late 1960's. He moved to Yorkshire in 1975 and attended Northern College from 1978 to 1980. From 1980 to 1983 he went to Sheffield City Polytechnic and read historical studies. He worked for Rotherham Age Concern, Sheaf Training and Doncaster College. From 2003 until his diagnosis in December 2015, he worked at Chesterfield College as a lecturer for students with learning difficulties and disabilities. Brett was an accomplished joiner and carpenter, and enjoyed many hobbies over the years. These include walking, cycling, horse riding and he enjoyed model boats and railways. Brett loved his family and friends and continued to enjoy spending happy times with them during his illness. He valued their kindness and support. Brett was an in patient in St Lukes for several weeks in late 2017, and received excellent care from all the staff. Brett was truly remarkable. He was courageous, kind, generous, always ready to help, witty, irreverent, slightly eccentric and had a great sense of fun. He was a real gentleman.

Thoughts
I had the pleasure of working with brett in the 70s with bradford council,I was a apprentice at the time ,brett was a very funny and caring person and will be sadly missed.

I received a text from Brett on the early afternoon of Thursday 23rd November 2017 - 'Got to St. Luke's this morning - seen lots of staff. So a bit of a blur today. But would love to see soon'. I visited him at St. Luke's a few times up and including to Christmas Eve, and I always found it a very friendly and peaceful place. He had a good send-off on Friday 19th January 2018 - there must have been about a hundred people at his funeral.
