Moraig Cochrane
1949 - 2024 | Sheffield
Moraig was born in 1949 in Broughty Ferry, the younger sister of Dick and Fiona. She trained as a primary school teacher in Dundee, before moving to Tunbridge Wells with her husband to raise their children, Tina and Ally. She spent nearly her entire career at St Matthews Primary School in High Brooms, where she taught children across all year groups. Having lived in a cottage on the High Street in Wadhurst for over twenty years, her last two years were spent in Sheffield, where she lived on the same road as her grandsons, Fergus and Eddie. She will be remembered as a hilarious colleague and friend, brilliant teacher, wonderful sister, wise Auntie, loving mum, and devoted grannie. We love her and we miss her x

I referred to Moraig as "my ray of sunshine" as her entrance through the doorway of my classroom meant a wonderful thing- NQT time. The 30 little darlings were, for an afternoon, no longer in my care but in Moraig's capable, expert hands. She'd come in, the seasoned pro, ready to run with whatever I had (or hadn't quite!) thought through for the children. And they loved her. As did I, wiser in years than I, she taught me the phrase and reality that I was "a small cog in a big wheel" which helped lessen the pressure and responsibility I felt trying to be a good teacher in my early career. We enjoyed Celtic bonding, chuckling at English idiosyncrasies and a jolly good cackle. Moraig and Bev treated me to a cream tea (after a walk!) to celebrate finishing my teacher training year. Precious memories, thank you Moraig.xxx

When I arrived at St Matthew's, I not only found a new job, but also a wonderful new friend. So many hilarious moments. Here are just a few: *Teaching children to dance on the residential - busting some serious moves. *Coming into my classroom, mid-lesson, pretending to be attacked by a large stuffed tiger toy! *Creating a lifelike iceberg out of white paper and a step ladder for one of her legendary assemblies. *Throwing all paperwork into the boot of her car during OFSTED *Teaching using very minimal planning *Being a member of the SLUTS (Senior Leadership Team) *Never being allowed to sit together during staff meetings, but getting around this by sitting opposite each other instead *Always bringing laughter to the staffroom Working with Moraig was so much fun. I truly believe that she helped to mould me into the teacher I am now (for good or bad!). She was loved by all, staff and children, and had a particular soft spot for those children who, as any good school report would say, 'displays challenging behaviour'. She loved the underdogs and they loved and respected her. Once retired and the Supper Club was founded, we shared many hilarious Christmas parties, went on many walks always including a tea room stop off, and met up as often as possible for meals and get togethers. She will be deeply missed. I feel so happy and privileged to have known her. Bev
