Mark Sharrard
1960 - 2024 | Sheffield
Dr Mark Sharrard. In loving memory of our beloved dad, husband, brother, uncle and colleague Mark Sharrard. Mark was a proud family man as the father of five magnificent sons and husband of over thirty-two years to his wife, Sally. We cherish many happy memories of him over the years, such as his excellent cooking skills, love of music and competitive Scrabble games. Mark was a renowned paediatric metabolic consultant at Sheffield Children’s Hospital helping care for children and their families from South Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire, and the East Midlands for over 25 years. He was dedicated and passionate about his area of expertise and always had time for his patients, their families and his team. Mark died at St Luke’s Hospice after a short illness, where the amazing and compassionate care allowed us to spend his precious final days together. We will be forever grateful and we miss him very much.

Mark was a wonderful paediatrician & a very knowledgeable metabolic doctor but, above all, an extremely nice man. He was kind & modest, with a gentle sense of humour. It was a privilege to know him & work with him. My colleagues in Manchester all share these views: we were all shocked to hear of his death. It has been lovely to read the tributes here & learn more about the family, of whom he was so proud. Andrew Morris

When my son was first diagnosed with PKU, it was Dr Sharrard and his fantastic team that was there for us. This was a very difficult point in our lives back in the early 2000s. Until my son’s transfer to the adult team, they continued to support us fully. I am now extremely saddened to hear of Dr Sharrard’s death; as recorded in the NSPKU ‘News & Views’. The world has lost someone truly very special. I send my love and condolences to his close family, friends and colleagues whom I am aware will continue to indefinitely miss him. X

I am so sad to find out today that Dr Sharrard has passed away. He was the Metabolic Consultant at Sheffield Children’s hospital and looked after my daughter for many years. Mark’s kindness always shone through, he was always willing to learn from children and their parents and without his care, Georgia would not have lived as long as she did. My heartfelt condolences to his family and all his colleagues. His passing is very sad news. He was one of the good ones The Makepeace Family

I've only had the chance to meet Mark once. I wish it could have been more than that, but I will always remember him now, sitting around that table with his beautiful family, having a nice barbecue in the sunshine of a warm summer day. How lucky are we who have met Mark in our lifetime, and how beautiful that some parts of him remain on this Earth for a long time, through the beautiful warmth and kindness of his sons and wife. Pensez a eux, car la vrai tombe c'est l'oublie. Love, Marie

We first met Mark some 36 years ago, soon after he met our daughter Sally at Guys Hospital London. Sally, a trainee nurse, was in the staff canteen and very upset after losing her first patient. Mark being the man he was, offered her consolation and a friendship was struck. This of course grew into what we know today, a very happy marriage. Mark was a remarkable man and the love for his family, the dedication to his patients and work colleagues, is well documented. We can only add that we will be eternally grateful to Mark for being a wonderful husband to Sally and for producing five wonderful grandsons. Andrew and Sylvia Johnson , York.

Nick: I first met Mark at the Northern General Hospital in 1993. Mark was my registrar in paediatrics. I have strong memories of Mark being called to review sometimes very poorly children. All around were panicking, but Mark in his characteristic methodical, quiet and calm manner would sort it out to everyone’s relief. He had that wonderful skill that all of us who have worked in acute health settings recognise: imbuing a unit with a confident feeling that all would be well because he was there. Cath: Mark eating seafood chowder at our table with friends and summer barbecues at their house. Us arriving for dinner with some of the ‘mums from school’ couples to find that Mark was falling ill and Nick taking him to hospital - he had finished the cooking and absolutely insisted that the dinner carried on! We remember how very hard Mark worked, for so very long - his dedication within the NHS was phenomenal. He never seemed to speak carelessly, he was softly spoken and always showed kindness and respect to everyone. I could see how distracted and preoccupied Mark was shortly before he was to undergo surgery but he gave me a real bear hug the last time I saw him at home. The Sharrard home has always been a warmly welcoming place for all four of us at various times. It will have been a source of immense pride to Mark and Sally to see their sons grow and mature into such fine young men.

My son was 18 months old when he was diagnosed with a rare metabolic condition - OTC deficiency - and we landed at Dr Sharrard’s door. Remarkably, Sam is now in his first year at university - undertaking a degree in children’s nursing. The metabolic team in Sheffield and then Nottingham - led by Dr Sharrard - made Sam’s future possible. I will remember Dr Sharrard for his knowledge, skill and expertise, his kindness, gentle nature and his reassuring presence. When I felt lost and had so many questions he answered them all - with endless patience and such care. Dr Sharrard - you were one of a kind. We were so saddened to learn about Mark's passing. We now live in the same house on Ringinglow Road that Mark, Sally and the boys lived in previously and we are still neighbours as they moved just a few houses down the road. We would occasionally bump into Mark on our respective dog walks around the block and we would often stop to chat briefly about the dogs, family, etc.. Mark was such a softly-spoken and gentle man. We didn't know much about his work other than he worked at the Children's hospital and the messages posted here confirm that he touched so many lives both personally and professionally. I know memories and stories of Mark will be appreciated by the family so here's one that sticks in my memory. When our dogs were both puppies in the lockdown years, Mark was ambling along the road with Duggie off-lead by his side. Our dog Harry slipped his lead and proceeded to chase Duggie all the way along the pavement back to Mark and Sally's house whereupon the roles reversed and Duggie chased Harry all the way back to our house! Both Mark and I stood staring unable to intervene and watching jaws wide open as the dogs played out this hilarious scene. We would like to pass on our sincere condolences and best wishes to Sally, the boys and all those to whom Mark meant so much. Andy, Roz, Fabien and Louis

I so enjoyed our conversations, Mark had a lovely sense of humour! I was in such awe of Mark's dedication to his paediatric specialty whilst he fitted in a very busy family life. Mark and I were cousins and we last saw each other at my mum's funeral last year. We had so much in common through our families, and as the youngest of all my cousins I really appreciated that Mark was close both in age and outlook on life. Each time we met and were able to talk about family, life and other matters, Mark and I enjoyed a deep understanding that comes from being part of the same family. One of my fondest family memories was staying with Mark and his mum and dad when we were both young; I am very fortunate indeed to have known Mark all of this time. I am also extremely proud that he was my cousin, that he achieved so much in his life, and was someone who held to the highest standards, values and care as a person. I was stupefied and profoundly saddened to learn that Mark passed away unexpectedly after a short illness.. When I look back at my memories with Mark and his wife Sally during his stay with me in Paris in 2000, many lovely souvenirs come up to my eyes. I felt very honored that Mark and the renowned historical Sheffield metabolic medicine center asked me to welcome him for a 6 months clinical training in my ward. Mark was a «good man», simple, natural, unsophisticated, and easy to deal with. He was one of my favorite foreign visiting fellows, sharp, warm, open minded and flexible. A true metabolic physician. Among others, I remember how he accepted (although non specialist) to be chairman and translator at a nurses Paris Necker/London GOSH joined workshop on the clinical management of hypoglycaemia at the bed side in the frame of a seminar on congenital hyperinsulism. He was very successful in this difficult task. But above all, I remember Sally and Mark, at our home for dinner when Sally breast fed Pierre who was just born, still very small but already a beautiful boy sucking conscientiously. My wife and I (many times parents and grandparents) were delighted, moved, and touched seeing Mark’s pride and joy when looking at Sally and his 3rd son Pierre (not Peter! he said). Among our numerous visiting fellows, Mark does remain in our memory as a very devoted family man. Indeed, Sheffield metabolic center was right and lucky to have such a good man as a clinician referent! I will pray for him. Mark was the epitome of a gentle man. He loved his family dearly and was respected by all he came into contact with. I used to love hearing from lovely Sal about him doing cross stitch. He exuded calm. A wonderful husband and father.

Mark was the kindest, most gentle soul with an excellent sense of humour. He was a friend as well as a colleague and I feel so lucky to have known him. I miss him so much and still can’t believe he’s not going to come into our office looking for snacks and a chat. My thoughts are with his family, friends and Dougie. Rest in peace Mark you legend. I have known Mark as a friend, through Sally, for many years. He was such a gentle, calm and kind man and so hardworking and dedicated towards his paediatric speciality which he clearly loved. He was also the most superb cook! His recent death is a very sad loss and he will be missed. Thank you to St Luke’s for the wonderful care they gave not only to Mark, but also for the support given to Sally and their five wonderful sons. Xx

Mark was one of the kindest people to me during our time together as Biochemistry students at Trinity College, Oxford (1979-1982). Many fond memories of delicious dinners, fun drives in his car to London for treats ( a surprise trip to Ronnie Scott's Nightclub still makes me smile), and for sharing his notes on the Biochemistry practicals that I had " forgotten" to attend.. He will be very much missed. All my sympathy to his family. Love Helena.

Dear Mark and family, As a family, we are extremely heartbroken to learn of Mark's unfortunate news. Although he will be sorely missed, his dedication to the children with the most complex medical needs will live on forever. He treated Elliott for five and a half years, the best five and a half years the metabolic team could have ever given us. All I know is that our Elliott would have greeted him warmly and cheerfully upon arriving at the golden gates. We are sending Mark's family our sincere gratitude and love for sacrificing so much to allow him to dedicate his life helping metabolic children. Love from the Grangers

How do I begin to describe what a loss we feel as Mark's closest work colleagues. I have worked with Mark for 14 years and have learnt so much. It was such a pleasure to work with someone who showed me so much respect and always listened to my concerns and opinions. He made me feel part of the team! Mark was also a friend and we had lots of fun times along the way, from conference nights out to random barn dances! Mark was also up for a chat or a gossip! I'll always remember his gentle manner and of course his coffee obsession! I'll miss you so much Dr Mark Sharrard! Rest in peace xxx
