For 45 years together, 39 married, Sandra supported me in pressured jobs, bringing up 4 children in a more patient way than I ever could. She became a surrogate mum to many of our friend’s children, and our children’s friends. She helped arrange our children’s weddings, delighted for them, and became both mum-in-law and friend to our son and daughters-in-law. Sandra became like a second mum to our grandchildren, nephews and niece. She was also a good friend. Uncritical and never gossipy she could be trusted with a confidence and always saw the best in people. Those who counted her as a ‘best’ friend are vast in number. Following her diagnosis of terminal cancer, she was incredibly brave and never bitter, only concerned for the sadness of friends and family. Her last words were of thanks to St Luke's staff for their care. The family are immensely grateful to the St Luke's community, in-patient and bereavement team for their marvellous care for her and us.
